Indus International School - Servant Leadership

Summary:  Education at Indus emphasizes the concept of Servant Leadership and hence students are encouraged to initiate and participate in community service projects.

Servant Leadership at Indus International School

Leadership for Tomorrow is the central idea of the school. This stems   from the belief that Preparation for Life is the purpose of 21st century education. At Indus, leadership is defined as the ability to first lead yourself and then others (through service). As at the end of the day, leadership is experiential.

At IndusInternational School Bangalore (IISB), we believe in the concept of “Servant Leadership” and students initiate & actively participate in community service. Community Service projects at IISB nurture leadership skills by stimulation of both the left and right brain. These projects sensitize students and make them aware of local needs, which then attunes them to global issues.

Education at Indus emphasizes that values cannot be taught in classrooms. They have to be role modeled and experienced. Values such as love, empathy, discipline and respect are nurtured and developed in students by actively encouraging participation in social service projects.

Principles of the Indus Trust emphasize:
·        Providing equal opportunities to the underprivileged
·        Servant Leadership –  leadership through service
·        Thinking  Globally and  Acting  Locally – Localism is a pre- requisite for globalism

Some of the student led initiatives which have been implemented at Indus Bangalore include:

Low Cost Sanitary Napkin Machine Initiative

The low cost Sanitary Napkin Machine is a student initiative which focuses on Wellness and Women’s Empowerment. The machine can manufacture sanitary napkins for less than one third the cost of most branded ones. Small wonder then,  that the inventor, social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham, drew attention in 2014, when Time magazine placed him on  its list of ‘101 Most Influential People in the World’. Funds have been raised and the training for students as well as teachers is underway. The underprivileged women in Sarjapur (a rural location near Bangalore, city) will have an opportunity for better hygiene and comfort at low cost.

Mobile Health Care Centre

The Mobile Health care centre is a unique social service initiative to provide basic healthcare facilities and create awareness about health and hygiene in the villages of Kalahalli, Handenhalli and Billapura (Sarjapura District, Bangalore). A doctor and a nurse will serve on the mobile health care centre.  For three hours every-day, each village will have the van and services available for consultation and treatment.     Medicines will be provided free of cost and tests such as blood or urine tests will also be conducted. Tele-medicine facilities will be available through a tie up with Narayana Hrudayalaya.

Kalahalli Advocacy Project

The Kalahalli Advocacy Project, a student led initiative, is aimed at providing low cost,  safe drinking water to the residents of the village of Kalahalli. The project was initiated, based on a survey conducted by the students about the water problem in the village. Funds were generated by students from grade 6 upwards for the setting up of an RO(reverse osmosis) plant in the village. The RO plant was successfully installed in Kalahalli on 15th August, 2014.

As a part of this project students organized a series of awareness campaigns in Kalahalli to sensitize the residents about problems and diseases connected with the consumption of impure drinking water .These campaigns included door to door campaigning in over 530 households in the village as well as community meetings, all of which were successful in conveying the intended message.

Further to the installation of the RO plant, students on their visits to Kalahalli, noticed a large amount of good, clean water from the RO plant being wasted. This led them to come up with their second initiative which was to find a solution for water wastage and recycling. They decided to install a water tank at the site of the RO plant, to save and utilize the waste water. Funds through various fund-raisers, were raised by students of IISB. The water tank was inaugurated on 25 April 2015, and has visibly improved the quality of life and health of the village residents.
